New South Wales Regional Profile

New South Wales is a vast and varied state: from snow-capped mountains with excellent skiing facilities to long, golden sandy beaches, and from the utter emptiness of the Outback to the cosmopolitan vitality of the State capital – New South Wales has it all.

Located in the south-east of the country, north of Victoria and south of Queensland, New South Wales (NSW) is Australia's most populous state with a population of 6.8 million. The NSW Climate is generally temperate enough to allow a year- round outdoor lifestyle.  It varies in different parts of the State, from the sub-tropical north, to the drier inalnd regions and Snowy Mountain areas.

Living in NSW

People living in NSW enjoy a very high quality of life. Sydney shared ninth place out of 215 cities in the 2006 Worldwide Quality of Living index compiled by Mercer Human Resource Consulting. As the most multicultural city in the Asia Pacific, Sydney's cultural diversity has produced a society that is creative, open and friendly. Sydney offers a secure environment for families, with excellent facilities, transport and telecommunications.

Regional NSW offers an abundance of business opportunities and a relaxed lifestyle. With a population of more than 2,519,000, regional NSW covers 800,000 sq km and offers a range of geography and climates, from the humid coastal environment of the north, to the semi-arid desert in the west, and the alpine peaks and sheep-wheat belt of the south. This diversity encourages a variety of industries to flourish

NSW: Australia's dominant economy

NSW is the centre of the national economy which is larger than each of the national economies of Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and New Zealand. More than 65% of all Asia Pacific regional headquarters located in Australia are based in NSW with Sydney being the business hub of Australia and a leading financial centre in the Asia Pacific.
