Climate The climate is distinctly Mediterranean. The nearby Southern Ocean ensures hot, dry summers and cool, mild winters. Although spring brings the most rain to the area, South Australia receives less rainfall in comparison to other Australian states.Housing Adelaide offers a wide range of housing options that can satisfy all tastes and meet all budgets. The housing mix contains heritage and contemporary properties ranging from quaint 19th Century cottages to terrace houses, villas and free standing mansions besides contemporary flats, townhouses and warehouse apartments. Economy The economy of Adelaide is largely based on manufacturing, wholesale and retail, and community service. Unique to Adelaide is the wine producing industry. The city has grown a reputation as a reliable exporter of quality niche products for markets all over the world and many multinational companies have recognized the advantages of locating their Asia Pacific or Australian operations in Adelaide. Local Transport Adelaide is a quick and easy place to get around, with bus and train services connecting all parts of the city and suburbs. It is possible to reach almost any point of the metropolitan area within 20 minutes. Adelaide Metro is the city's transport system servicing the greater metropolitan region with trains and buses including the Glenelg tram. There are also free buses which cover the Central Business District. The international airport is 8km west of the city centre. Shopping Rundle Mall is the shopping heart of the City of Adelaide and was created in September 1976 as Australia's first street mall. Performing Arts Every two years, the Adelaide Festival of Arts and the Festival Fringe bring the City a worldclass extravaganza of cultural delights - these and other festivals dotted throughout the year give Adelaide its title as the "Festival City". Lifestyle and Outdoor Recreation Adelaide is often referred to as a 'city within a park' as it contains 29 parks, an amazing 45 per cent of the city area. Beyond the inner city, the suburbs of Adelaide also enjoy the luxury of being near nature, with many fine examples of natural bushland successfully rubbing shoulders with residential areas. By the sea, in the foothills, along rivers, these important natural spaces provide a wide range of activities and facilities. Education The city has three universities and a number of TAFE's and private institutions offering tertiary education to local and international students.
