Share market follows US down - September 16

THE share market fell nearly 2.5 per cent in early trading, as jitters about the US financial system swept the market.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 was down 110.9 points, or 2.3 per cent to 4706.8, while the broader All Ordinaries dropped 117.4 points, or 2.41 per cent to 4757.6.

Turnbull takeover complete - September 16

MALCOLM Turnbull says his leadership of the Liberal Party will promote opportunity and fairness.

Mr Turnbull toppled Brendan Nelson as Liberal leader in a ballot in Canberra this morning after the former leader last night sprung a surprise leadership spill.

“It’s a great honour and privilege (and) humbling to be elected to the leadership of the Federal Liberal Party,” Mr Turnbull said at his first press conference as leader. The millionaire lawyer turned merchant banker said he had been raised by a single parent, renting flats and struggling to earn money.

Guilty verdicts in terror trial – September 15

A MUSLIM cleric has been found guilty of leading and being a member of a terrorist organisation in Australia's biggest terror trial.

Jurors today found Abdul Nacer Benbrika, 48, was a member of a Melbourne terror cell.

Five of his followers were also found guilty.

Benbrika displayed no emotion as the jury delivered a guilty verdict on charges of intentionally directing the activities of a terrorist organisation and of being a member of a terrorist organisation.

Brisbane Broncos rugby league footballers under investigation – September 15

NRL premiership betting is in turmoil with reports that police are investigating three Brisbane Broncos players over an alleged sexual assault at a Brisbane nightclub. Bookmakers across the country have suspended grand final betting and all betting involving the Broncos until police complete their investigations after a woman made a complaint on Saturday night. Police set up a crime scene at the Alhambra Lounge in inner-city Fortitude Valley after the woman said was sexually assaulted in a toilet.

They confirmed today that they had received a formal complaint, and are expected to interview players and witnesses today.
