Birmingham is the capital of the West Midlands region and is the economic, social and cultural focus of the region. It is cosmopolitan in its make-up and is an exciting city, hosting a range of visual and performing arts and a variety of music and theatre, difficult to surpass.

There are approximately 1,006,500 residents of the city, according to the 2006 Sub-National Mid-year Population Estimates (source: Office for National Statistics).

Economy

Birmingham’s economy has changed significantly over the past few decades with the service sector replacing manufacturing as the principal source of employment. Forecasts suggest that output and productivity are set to grow over the next five years with the service sector and the visitor economy creating up to 50,000 additional jobs in the city over the next ten years. However, manufacturing continues to be a key element of Birmingham’s economy, with increasing focus on high-technology production.
