Liverpool City Guide

Whether Liverpool is your intended destination or just a brief stopover on the way to your new home, we have compiled this guide to help you get your bearings on arrival. To obtain more details about the city check out the websites listed at the end of this profile.

Population

According to the 2006/2007 estimates, Liverpool is populated by some 445,000 people. It is the ninth largest city in the UK.

Geography

Covering an area of 111.84 square meters, the city of Liverpool is situated along the Merseyside River, at 353 km north-west of London.

Economy

As a historically commercial city, Liverpool has a constantly growing economy. Major regeneration projects, inward business investment and an increase in jobs for local people have seen an upturn in the city's economy in recent years.

Dining Out

Liverpool’s restaurant and bar scene has blossomed over recent years and new venues are opening all the time. Spending a lazy afternoon people watching from a waterfront cafe, getting dressed to impress for a meal at an exclusive restaurant or even dining in an old police station are some of the options. The city has much to offer for authentic Chinese, Japanese and even Russian cuisine.

Local Transport

Located in the north-west of England, the city has good road and rail connections, along with rapid trans-global sea routes. Liverpool city centre has two major bus stations; Paradise Street Bus Station and the Queen Square Bus Station. Liverpool has one of the most frequent commuter services outside London.

The city centre Car Club, launched in 2006, offers pay-as-you-go car hire (from as little as one hour) to residents of Liverpool. They provide access to a car when one is needed without the running costs (fuel, tax, maintenance or insurance) of ownership as the hourly rate covers this. Intercity train services run from major towns within the mainland.

Arts & Culture/Performing Arts

Liverpool has many attractions with large parks and impressive public buildings which reflect the city’s rich heritage. St. George’s Hall, Walker Art Gallery,
Royal Liver Building, Albert Dock, Merseyside Maritime Museum and Tate Liverpool (a modern art gallery) are among the examples of the city’s splendid architecture.

Being the home The Beatles, Liverpool has many Aintreethat commemorate the story of the most successful band of all time. The Beatles Story is the only museum in the world that focuses entirely on the band. The Waterfront Region in Liverpool was awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO, recognising the city for its outstanding values and role in development of trade. The city has recently been awarded as the European Capital of Culture 2008.
