Covering an area of 1,579 square kilometres, the Greater London region includes the city of London and 32 London boroughs.
London’s well-established transport system includes an extensive web of air, road, rail and river networks. It has 6 airports; Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City and Biggin Hill. The London Underground and the Docklands Light Railway operate in central, east and south-east London. The Tramlink system connects Croydon to New Addington, Beckenham, Elmers End and Wimbledon in south London. Running over 700 different routes, buses are a quick and convenient transport option. Licensed taxis (black cabs) can be hailed in the street or at designated ranks situated in prominent places, including many mainline rail, Tube and bus stations. Thames riverboat services are also becoming ever more popular with visitors and commuters.
Populated by various ethnic groups, London is a true melting pot of diverse cultures. Over 150 theatres and 300 art galleries offer breathtaking cultural activities. From fashion, film, fine arts and music to food, drink, and health and beauty, London is home to numerous events and festivals.
Sports are seriously taken in London. During the season between August to May, more than half a million Londoners attend professional football matches every Saturday. The three biggest London teams are Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Tennis is also very popular in London and every year for two weeks in late July tennis fans focus their attention on Wimbledon. The Oxford and Cambridge boat race, cricket at Lord’s Cricket Ground and the famous London Marathon bring lots of enthusiastic spectators together and the Epson Derby provide a brilliant spectacle for those who enjoy the races.

London’s weather changes from cold and damp in winter to bright and warm in the summer. It rarely freezes or snows in London in the winter. In the spring and autumn, temperatures average between 10°C and 15°C. In summers, it is generally sunny, with the occasional rainstorm.
